    How this works

Flavor axes. Every hop's flavor notes from hops.json are mapped to one of 8 categories: Citrus, Tropical, Stone & Berry, Pine & Dank, Herbal & Tea, Floral, Spice & Earth, Wine & Funk. The first listed note is weighted heaviest (it's the dominant character); later notes contribute less. The result is a profile vector across all 8 axes.

Similarity. The "algorithm matches" panel uses cosine similarity between profile vectors. Two hops with the same shape but different intensities still match — the algorithm cares about which axes dominate, not absolute scoring.

Substitutes. The "official substitutes" panel comes from each hop's substitutes field in our data — the conventional list that brewers and hop suppliers recommend. Sometimes these agree with the algorithm; sometimes they don't, which often surfaces an interesting flavor twin you wouldn't have thought of.
