The durable middle ground. Here's the freshness window for Amber / Red Ale, what makes it age the way it does, and where to find the best examples.
Why Amber Ale ages this way
Amber Ales balance caramel malt with moderate hop additions. The caramel character from crystal malts is very stable. Hop aromatics fade over months but the bitterness and malt backbone hold the beer together. Irish Red Ales are particularly malt-forward and stable.
How to store Amber Ale
Cool storage is sufficient. Refrigeration helps but isn't required.
When to drink it
Within 6 months. Past 9 months expect significant hop fade but the malt structure remains drinkable.
Worth knowingAnchor Steam, technically a California Common rather than a true Amber, has been brewed continuously since 1896 and helped revive American craft brewing in the 1960s.
