Why Session IPA ages this way

Session IPAs are the most freshness-sensitive style in modern craft. Without the alcohol heat or malt body of a regular IPA to provide stability, the hop character is the entire beer. Hop aromatics fade just as fast in a 4.5% IPA as in a 7% IPA — but in a session beer, there's less malt structure to mask the staleness. A 6-week-old session IPA tastes noticeably tired; a 3-month-old one is sad.

How to store Session IPA

Refrigerate immediately and continuously. Cold storage is the only meaningful intervention. Session IPAs at room temperature for even a few warm summer days age dramatically.

When to drink it

Within 4-5 weeks of canning for full hop expression. Past 8 weeks the beer is on the downward slope. Past 3 months you're drinking a different beer than what was intended. Check the canned-on date before buying — for this style, freshness matters more than brewery reputation.

Worth knowingThe "session beer" term comes from British WWI munitions factory work shifts — workers were given drinking sessions during which the beer had to be low enough ABV to maintain productivity. Modern session IPAs preserve that low-ABV constraint while loading in modern American hop intensity.
