Craft beer in Michigan
Michigan's craft beer story is told by two giants: Bell's Brewery in Comstock (1985) and Founders Brewing in Grand Rapids (1997). Both started small and grew to national distribution while maintaining serious quality. Bell's Two Hearted Ale and Founders Breakfast Stout are widely cited as American craft beer canon.
Michigan's craft beer story
Larry Bell founded Bell's at age 27 in a 15-gallon soup kettle. Founders nearly went bankrupt before Breakfast Stout and KBS rescued the brewery. Both became models for how to scale a craft brewery without selling out — though both eventually saw majority sales to international beverage companies.
