North Carolina, particularly Asheville, became one of the most concentrated craft beer destinations in America in the 2010s. Burial Beer Co., Wicked Weed, Hi-Wire, and many others established the city as a beer travel destination. Sierra Nevada's East Coast facility opened in nearby Mills River in 2014.

Asheville has been voted 'Beer City USA' multiple times. The state passed the 'Pop the Cap' law in 2005 raising the legal ABV limit, which enabled the high-alcohol craft styles that followed.
