What it tastes like

Enigma is a high-impact Australian hop bred by Hop Products Australia from Swiss Tettnang stock. It throws crisp white-grape and pinot gris notes alongside tart redcurrant, raspberry and sweet rockmelon. Its character shifts dramatically with dose and timing, so brewers treat it as a flexible late-addition and dry-hop variety — use a light hand or it can dominate a beer.

Tasting Tip
Dose carefully and add late or as a dry hop — its white-wine and redcurrant character intensifies and shifts with timing, and it can easily overpower a beer.

History

Enigma (cultivar code 02-016-008) was bred by Hop Products Australia (HPA) and is a descendant of the Swiss Tettnang (Tettnanger) hop crossed with North American material — although Tettnang-derived, it grows vigorously like a North American hop. It was commercially released around 2013, with expanded plantings producing its first generous crop in 2015.

Freshness Note
High total-oil variety; store cold and sealed and use fresh, as its delicate wine and berry aromatics fade with age.
