Craft beer in Auckland
New Zealand · Oceania
The scene
New Zealand punches enormously above its weight in craft beer, thanks largely to Wellington's Garage Project but with a deep Auckland scene too. The unofficial "Beer Mile" around Kingsland concentrates Urbanaut + others — Urbanaut is the consensus first stop. Auckland's broader scene spans suburbs: Onehunga (Epic), Mount Eden (Brothers), Avondale (Hopscotch), Morningside (Batsmen at The Tapping Room). Kiwi craft leans heavily into hops — Galaxy, Nelson Sauvin, Riwaka, and Motueka are Aotearoa's gift to American IPAs.

Getting around & local context
Public transport is fine but limited to central — many breweries require a car or rideshare. The Kingsland Beer Mile is walkable in an afternoon. Most breweries serve food (burgers, pizza). Pricing high — NZ$12-14 per pint is standard. West Auckland has tighter liquor laws (Trust controls retail) — affects what bottle shops carry. Many places closed Mondays.
