Craft beer in Berlin

The scene

While Bavaria stays mostly traditional, Berlin has been Germany's experimental craft beer capital for over a decade. Berliner Weisse (the historic sour wheat) is back from the dead through a wave of revival breweries. American-influenced IPAs and Belgian-style sours are everywhere. The scene clusters in Kreuzberg (Hopfenreich, Biererei), Friedrichshain (Protokoll, BRLO indirectly), and Neukölln (smaller taprooms). Berlin still has cash-only quirks but the craft scene runs cards fine.

Getting around & local context

U-Bahn + S-Bahn cover everything. Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain are the two craft beer corridors. Most taprooms are open evening-to-late only (5pm-late). Cash is still useful at smaller venues (Protokoll is cash-only). Berliner Weisse is a Berlin specialty — try it if you see it.
