The scene

London's craft beer scene operates on two simultaneous tracks: the traditional cask-ale-on-hand-pump tradition served at characterful older pubs, and the modern craft wave with brewery-owned taprooms and indie bottle shops. The latter is heavily concentrated east (Hackney, Tottenham, Bermondsey, Brixton) where the Bermondsey Beer Mile (Kernel, Anspach & Hobday, Brew By Numbers, etc.) draws beer pilgrims weekends. Central pubs like The Harp, Cask Pub & Kitchen, and The Craft Beer Co. cover the cask side. Bottle shops are where the new wave really shows — Hop Burns & Black, Clapton Craft, Ghost Whale.

Getting around & local context

TfL is unbeatable for navigating between districts. Saturday Bermondsey Beer Mile is the bucket-list experience but get there before noon — by 3pm the line at Kernel is intense. Cask ale temperature is intentionally warmer than keg craft — that's the style, not a problem. Tipping isn't expected at the bar (but is appreciated for table service). Most pubs run 11am-11pm; bottle shops typically noon-8pm.
