Craft beer in Brussels

Belgium · Europe

The scene

Brussels has been a beer pilgrimage destination for decades thanks to Belgium's protected brewing styles: lambic, gueuze, trappist, dubbel/tripel/quadrupel, and witbier. The traditional scene revolves around the Cantillon brewery (must-visit pilgrimage), classic cafés in the city center, and Delirium's multi-floor taphouse. The modern scene adds BBP (Brussels Beer Project — two locations, brewing their own + experimental styles) and a wave of newer breweries pushing past tradition. Bottle shops here are unmatched: stores routinely stock 500+ Belgian beers, with lambic specialists carrying decade-aged bottles.

Getting around & local context

STIB Metro + tram cover everything. Most beer bars open afternoon and run very late (3-4am on weekends). Belgian beer is priced reasonably (€4-7) but specific bottles can be €15+. Order Belgian-style at the bar ("Une [name], s'il vous plaît"). Some places only accept cash, especially smaller bars. Cantillon is a separate visit (book in advance) and isn't on this list — it's the destination, not a hang.
