Craft beer in Melbourne

The scene
Melbourne is unquestionably Australia's craft beer capital. The Inner North (Collingwood, Fitzroy, Brunswick) hosts the highest density of breweries and brewpubs — Stomping Ground, Mountain Goat, Mountain Culture, Moon Dog, Bodriggy, Mister West — most with on-site taprooms. The bottle shop scene is exceptional: Carwyn Cellars in Thornbury, Mr West in Footscray, Beermash on Smith Street. Australian craft leans hard into hazies and tropical IPA styles using local Galaxy and Vic Secret hops.

Getting around & local context
Trams cover Inner North well — the 86 from city to Smith Street is the craft beer tram. Most breweries have BBQ-style food. Pricing is high (Australian dollars + alcohol tax) — expect AU$12-14 a pint. Most spots open afternoon (12-4pm) and run until 10-12pm. Sunday afternoons fill up at the Collingwood brewpubs.
