The scene

Japan's craft beer (kurafuto biiru) scene is in its second-wave maturity. After the 1994 deregulation kickstarted the first generation of breweries (Hitachino Nest, Coedo, Baird, Shiga Kogen), the 2010s brought a wave of smaller, more experimental shops — many now in Tokyo. The current scene clusters around Shibuya/Shimokitazawa (multi-tap bars), Nakameguro and Setagaya (boutique taprooms), Mejiro and Kuramae (small breweries with on-site taprooms). Japanese IPAs lean hazier than American counterparts; lots of sour and saison experimentation.

Getting around & local context

Tokyo Metro + JR cover everything — most spots are within 5 minutes of a station. Bars are small, often 8-15 seats — solo visits work fine, big groups need reservations. Cash still helps in smaller spots though IC cards work increasingly. Tabs run higher than Bangkok — expect ¥1000-1500 per pour. Most taprooms post tap lists on Untappd in real time.
