Craft beer in Cape Town

South Africa · Africa

The scene

South Africa's craft beer scene started slow but accelerated dramatically in the 2010s, and Cape Town is now the country's clear epicenter. Devil's Peak was the early pioneer; today the scene includes Woodstock Brewery (with both production and Observatory taproom), Shackleton (Paarden Eiland), and a wave of smaller operations like Charlie's Garage in Noordhoek. Most breweries cluster in the industrial-turned-hip neighborhoods of Woodstock, Salt River, and Paarden Eiland — all within a 15-minute drive of the city center. Belgian-style ales, hop-forward American IPAs, and oatmeal stouts are common.

Getting around & local context

Uber/Bolt are essential — public transport is limited and most breweries are in industrial areas not safe to walk between at night. Cape Town craft is reasonably priced (R30-50 per pint, ~$2-3 USD). Sunday is dead — most craft spots are closed. Bring cash for some smaller spots though cards work most places.
